| dc.description.abstract | Carbon steel serves as a fundamental material in the oil and gas industry, offering a unique combination of strength, affordability, and versatility that supports criti cal infrastructure and operations. From pipelines and storage tanks to drilling rigs and offshore platforms, carbon steel is indispensable for its ability to endure high pressures, mechanical loads, and dynamic environments. However, the harsh condi tions in which it operates characterized by exposure to corrosive agents, extreme temperatures, and mechanical stress pose significant challenges to its durability and performance. This chapter highlights the pivotal role of carbon steel in oil and gas applications, highlighting its key properties, such as tensile strength, toughness, and weldability, that make it suitable for demanding environments. It examines common challenges, including corrosion, hydrogen embrittlement, and fatigue, and evaluates protection strategies such as advanced coatings, cathodic protection, material optimi zation, and predictive maintenance. Furthermore, future perspectives are discussed, focusing on emerging technologies such as self-healing coatings, nanostructured alloys, and digital monitoring systems that aim to enhance its performance and sustainability. Through a comprehensive analysis of properties, applications, chal lenges, and advancements, this study underscores the enduring significance of carbon steel in the oil and gas industry. By adopting innovative protection strategies and integrating sustainability into material design and usage, the industry can ensure the continued reliability and cost-effectiveness of carbon steel in harsh environments. | |
